BASKETBALL – BAHRAIN champions Manama will be taking on Al Qadsia SC of Kuwait on Monday in the game for third place in the Gulf sub-zone of the 2024-25 Fiba West Asia Super League (WASL).
The schedule of remaining Gulf sub-zone fixtures has been announced by Fiba Asia, continental basketball’s governing body.
Manama will be playing their one-off contest in Kuwait City at Shaikh Saad Alabdullah Sport Hall Complex. The game is scheduled for a 7pm tip-off, Bahrain time.
It will be the third time Manama and Qadsia are facing off this Fiba WASL season. The Bahrainis had lost both previous meetings held during the Gulf sub-zone group stage – first in Kuwait City in October of last year and then at home in January. Manama then lost in the semi-finals in two games against Shabab Al Ahli of the UAE, being made to settle for the third-place classification affair.
Along with claiming the Gulf sub-zone bronze medals, Manama will be aiming to secure a spot in the Fiba WASL Final Eight. There, they are hoping to join Gulf finalists Shabab Al Ahli and Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia, who begin their best-of-three clash for the Gulf sub-zone title on Tuesday next week with game one. Game two is scheduled for April 15 and game three, if needed, on April 22.
In the Fiba WASL Final Eight, the top three teams from the Gulf sub-zone will join the top three from the West Asia sub-zone along with the champions of South and Central Asia.
That tournament will determine this season’s overall Fiba WASL champions.
Manama were the first-ever winners of the Fiba WASL’s overall crown in its inaugural campaign in 2022-23. They had also missed out on the Gulf crown that year, having finished as runners-up in the sub-zone.
Manama are hoping to secure a place in the Fiba WASL Final Eight for the third successive season. They lost all three of their games in the group phase of last year’s event as they were unable to defend their Fiba WASL overall crown.
