HORSERACING – RETURNOFTHEMAC and Piz Nair lifted the REHC Cups last night to headline the 24th meeting of the 2024-25 national season at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
The evening’s programme was held as part of REHC’s Ramadan Nights series. It was the penultimate event of the calendar during the holy month.
Returnofthemac clinched the REHC Cup in the sixth of eight races on last night’s card. Running amongst a field of imported horses over a 2,000m distance, Returnofthemac took first place to claim the lion’s share of the BD4,000 total prize. The eight-year-old gelding triumphed for owners Al Mohamediya Racing and trainer Osama Hashim, with jockey Ali Husain in the saddle.
Panning For Gold took second place for Mohamediya, Fawzi Nass, and Andrew Breslin; Merlin’s Beard was third for Mohamediya, Osama Hashim, and Hussain Asghar; and Soldier’s Empire took fourth for Mohamediya, Marco Botti, and Ray Dawson.
Meanwhile, Piz Nair won the REHC Cup in the second race yesterday, held over a 1,200-metre straight for imported horses, with BD4,000 in prize money. The four-year-old gelding emerged victorious for owners Al Adiyat Racing, trainer AM Smith, and jockey Ali Isa.
Piz Nair won by a head from runner-up Jehangeer, competing for Mohamediya, Botti, and Ali Husain. Cover Point finished third for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and Mohammed Jamil, while in fourth was The Thin Blue Line racing for Mohamediya and Ali Abdulmajeed, with Asghar in the saddle.
In the first race, a WAHO event, Al Saqlawieh 1932 won the Fatees Al Hajeri Cup, held over a 1,200m distance with BD1,500 in winnings. The four-year-old filly took the win for Victorious, Yousif Taher, and Abdulrahim Jasim.
Al Krush 1854 was second by a neck for Al Sakhir, Jaffar Marzooq, and Ebrahim Nader; Kuheilat Al Adiyat 1861 was third for Al Wasmiya, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Adnan Jaffar, and Al Saqlawieh M1070 took fourth for Mohamediya, Reyadh Ahmed, and Hasan Al Saffar.
Elsewhere last night, Epic lifted the Late S Sharaf Al Alawi Cup for owners Alliance Racing, trainer Yousif Alboainain, and jockey Husain Makki; Naahy won race three for local breeds, competing for Fata Abdulhameed Majeed, Osama Hashim, and Asghar; Fatal Obsession took race four for imported horses, racing for M and E Racing, Smith, and Alejandro Brun; Rawyaan triumphed in race five for imported runners for Hasan Emad Hasan, Ali Jan, and Anas Al Siyabi; and Tartan Chief won the seventh race for imported horses for Mohamediya and Abdulmajeed, with Dawson in the saddle.
