The mayor of a small town in Mexico married his crocodile bride on Friday in a colourful ceremony as traditional music rang out and revellers danced while imploring the indigenous leader to seal the nuptials with a kiss. It is part of an age-old ritual symbolising the joining of humans with the divine.
The ritual is believed to go back centuries to the pre-colonial times era.
“It is the union of two cultures, the union of the Huaves and the Chontales. This represents the union between the princess and a servant,” said Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa of the town of San Pedro Huamelula.
The crocodile is believed to be a deity representing Mother Earth. The marriage acts as a prayer for nature’s bounty.
Olivia Perez, the person in-charge of dressing the crocodile, said “for us the crocodile is important because she is the queen, the princess who comes to bring us water, a good harvest, rains, so that God the Almighty Father sends us food, fish, corn, the harvest.”
