Muscat: The Sultanate’s total population exceeded 4.44 million in May, posting a 0.3 per cent increase over figures for April 2016, according to the latest data published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
Expatriates numbered over 2.02 million, forming 45.5pc of the total population.
The Governorate of Muscat recorded the highest number of expatriates at 891,942, against 503,470 nationals, followed by the Governorate of North Al Batinah with 241,142 expatriates.
The Governorate of Dhofar came third with and expatriate population of 217,874.
The Governorate of Muscat registered the largest population at over 1.39 million people, marking a growth of 0.3pc over prior month’s population.
The Governorate of North Al Batinah came second with a population of 719,309 while the Governorate of A'Dakhiliyah took the third spot with 436,458 people.
The Governorate of North Al Batinah and the Governorate of A'Dakhiliyah logged a monthly population growth of 0.5pc and 0.4pc respectively.
Population of the Governorate of Dhofar population rose 0.9pc to 420,836 in May 2016 while the Governorate of Musandam population increased by 0.2pc to 42,854.
The Governorate of Al-Buraimi witnessed a population growth of 0.3pc taking the number of people to 107,484.
The monthly population growth in the Governorate of South Al-Batinah was 0.4pc with 396,442 people by May end while the Governorate of South A'Sharqiyah recorded a population of 293,616 marking a growth of 0.6pc.
The Governorate of North A'Sharqiyah population too grew by 0.6pc to 262,437 while the Governorate of A'Dhahirah and the Governorate of Al-Wusta each posted a 0.5pc monthly growth in its population, which reached 201,843 and 43,350 respectively in May.
However, the number of people categorized as ‘not belonging to any particular governorate’ fell 6.3pc over the April-May period to 121,407.
