HORSERACING – MEMBERSHIP and Pheonix headlined the list of winners last night in the first of back-to-back meetings marking the end of the 2024-25 season at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Membership lifted the SGB Future Stars Sprint Cup while Pheonix captured the Future Stars Champions Cup to shine brightest under REHC’s stunning floodlights.
The two races, each offering BD8,000 in total prize money, were the feature events in yesterday’s eight-race card at REHC. They were part of the 29th and penultimate meeting of this national campaign.
Isa Bin Salman Education Charitable Trust board of trustees chairman, Labour Fund (Tamkeen) chairman and REHC High Committee chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was in attendance, along with General Sports Authority vice-chairman Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.
Membership won the SGB Future Stars Sprint Cup competing for owners Al Adiyat Racing and trainer AM Smith, with jockey Abdulrahim Jasim in the saddle. The three-year-old colt took the 1,000m event for local breeds by a three-quarter’s length ahead of runner-up Princess of Monaco, competing for L&L Racing, Smith, and Lee Newman. Cosmic Power finished in third place for Al Adiyat, Smith, and Ebrahim Nader, while in fourth was Deham for Victorious, Yousif Taher, and Abdullah Alkhamis.
In the Future Stars Champions Cup, Pheonix secured first place with a dominant run in the 1,600m event for local breeds. The three-year-old colt, competing for M and E Racing, Smith, and Newman, finished with a six-and-a-half lengths’ margin from runner-up Evergreen, racing for Al Adiyat, Smith, and Nader. Illuminate was third for Victorious, Smith, and Alejandro Brun, while Mind Your Language was classified fourth for M and E, Smith, and Marcialis Jaures.
In other races last night, Tartan Chief won the REHC Cup and Mediterranean Moon took the Bahrain Turf Club Cup.
Tartan Chief secured first place in the REHC Cup, held over 2,200m for imported horses, for owners Al Mohamediya Racing, trainer Ali Abdulmajeed, and jockey Neil Callan. The six-year-old gelding won ahead of runner-up Rollajam, racing for Victorious, Fawzi Nass, and Nader; while Malakye came third for Al Sadah Syndicate, Mohammed Hasan, and Jaures. Monty Bay finished in fourth place for Al Mallah Racing, Abduljaleel Al Mallah, and Anas Al Siyabi to come away with the final portion of prize money.
The Bahrain Turf Club Cup was run over 2,000m and it featured BD3,000 in winnings. Mediterranean Moon claimed a narrow win for M and E, Smith, and Newman, finishing with just a head’s margin from Silk Road, who took second place for Al Adiyat, Smith, and Nader. Majarah came third for Shaikh Isa bin Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Jasim, while Sabraj was fourth for Sayed Nasser Hashem Habib, Samir Dawood, and Anas Al Siyabi.
Elsewhere yesterday, Call The Wind clinched the BAS Cup competing for L&L Racing, Smith, and Newman. The four-year-old colt took the 1,400m event for local breeds, offering BD2,000 in winnings, ahead of Call To Court, racing for Al Adiyat, Smith, and Nader. Black Pearl finished third for M and E, Smith, and Franky Vanhonsebrouck, while Scapegoat was fourth for Al Adiyat, Smith, and Abdulrahim Jasim.
In the evening’s first race, Al Saqlawy 1874 won the Al Rouda Cup, competing for Victorious, Yousif Taher, and Jasim. Obeyan 1893 was second for Al Wasmiya, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Nader; Kuheilan Weld Umm Zorayr 1838 came third for Victorious, Taher, and Ahmed Maki; and Al Saqlawy 1934 finished fourth for Victorious, Taher, and Abdullah Alkhamis.
Action at REHC continues tonight with the season’s 30th and final meeting. The eight-race card will be headlined by the Owner’s Cup, sponsored by Bapco Energies, which is set to carry BD12,000 in winnings. The event is to be contested by local breeds over a distance of 2,000m.
Also set to be up for the taking are the Bahrain Gold Cup, sponsored by Bapco Energies, and the Champions Sprint, sponsored by Bapco Energies – both of which are offering BD10,000 in prize money; the Bapco Energies Mile Cup and the Bapco Energies Cup, each featuring BD5,000 in winnings; the Bapco Energies Prestige Cup and the Bapco Energies Victory Sprint with BD4,000 apiece; and the Bapco Energies Arabian Cup, offering BD1,500 in total prizes.
