HORSERACING – BAHRAINI rider Ebrahim Nader has been crowned champion jockey of the 2024-25 national horseracing season at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Al Mohamediya Racing and Allan Smith have also emerged as the title winners amongst the owners and trainers, respectively.
The kingdom’s spectacular horseracing season came to a close last Friday with the campaign’s 30th and final meeting, held under REHC’s bright floodlights.
Spanning five-and-a-half months, it has been an historic season for REHC. For the first time, racing was held under lights, in addition to a record number of international horses coming to race in the kingdom. Furthermore, locally trained horses demonstrated the increasing quality of racing in Bahrain with their performances both domestically and abroad.
The titles for leading jockey, owner, and trainer were all confirmed in the season-finale.
Nader emerged as the champion jockey with 31 winners, five clear of Abdulrahim Jasim in second. Nader enjoyed a great season, riding winners for a variety of trainers, and his highlights included an emphatic victory in the Listed Al Methaq Mile on Goemon, the kingdom’s leading miler.
Smith regained his trainers’ title with 54 winners, nearly 20 more than runner-up and last season’s champion, Fawzi Nass, with 35. Already a multiple champion trainer in Bahrain, even by his standards, Smith’s yard has been in remarkable form of late, with 10 winners last week across the final two meetings of the season.
Al Mohamediya retained the owners’ title with 48 winners, 16 clear of Victorious Racing in second place. Al Mohamediya’s highest-rated horse Zagato once again delivered, winning four times in the 2024-25 season.
