Hundreds of WhatsApp accounts have been hacked in Oman in a new online scam targeting users.
The scam triggered the authorities and service providers to warn users to be on the alert and avoid responding to suspicious calls.
A service provider said that it had received nearly 100 such cases of WhatsApp being hacked in Oman.
Many users have reported getting calls from people claiming to be from telecom service providers stating that their accounts will be blocked if they don’t share the one-time password (OTP) sent.
Once the user shares the OTP, he finds his WhatsApp account blocked in the next few minutes.
Users have also been told that a service provider will never call from an unknown number, as the verification process is over during the installation stage itself.
