The kingdom’s Germanophiles are getting ready to don their lederhosen and enjoy the best of Bavarian culture as the annual Oktoberfest rolls into town … on Thursday night.
The stage has been set at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain’s newly-renovated Gulf Convention Centre celebrating its 20th anniversary of hosting the celebration.
Oktoberfest in Bahrain will feature a Bavarian village theme, in addition to an array of traditional delicacies with entertainment featuring the Lasterbacher Musikanten Band specially flown in from Germany.
A typical gent’s outfit at Oktoberfest will have a button-up shirt (either white or checkered), leather Lederhosen shorts with suspenders, an Alpine hat, and sturdy Bavarian shoes. The traditional Bavarian dress for women is called Dirndl and that’s what many choose to wear on the night.
Oktoberfest is an 18-day folk festival running in Munich, from mid-September and ending on the first Sunday in October, with more than six million people from around the world attending the event every year.
The first festival was held in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I. His marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen was marked throughout Bavaria. Five days after the marriage, a large feast was held in front of the Sendlinger Tor, one of the gates leading to Munich, and the tradition began.
The Gulf Hotel Bahrain’s one night festival is priced at BD 26+++, the buffet starts from 8pm. Call 17713000 for more details.
