HORSERACING – Bahrain's renowned racehorse Calif took an impressive third place yesterday in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, held as part of the prestigious Champions Day meeting at Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong.
The event was Hong Kong racing’s season-finale, and it featured three elite Group One events, attracting runners from all over the world.
The Queen Elizabeth II Cup was the day’s most valuable race, worth $3.582million. It was contested by 11 horses over 10 furlongs, with Calif competing for owners Victorious Racing and trainer Fawzi Nass, with jockey Adrie de Vries in the saddle.
Calif started the race towards the rear of the midfield, but gradually went up the order. The six-year-old finished not far behind winner Tasteira, racing for Carrot Farm Co Ltd, Noriyuki Hori, and Damian Lane, while Prognosis finished as runner-up for Shadai Race Horse Co Ltd, Mitsumasa Nakauchida, and James McDonald.Meanwhile, Bahrain’s other contender yesterday at Champions Day was Goemon, racing in the Group One Champions Mile, worth $3.07million.
Goemon ranked 11th amongst the 13 runners, competing for owner Mohammed Khalid Abdulrahim, trainer Haider Ebrahim, and jockey Kevin Stott.
