HANDBALL – AL Ahli lifted the Bahrain Handball Federation (BHF) Cup for the 2024-25 season last night.
Ahli secured the coveted trophy after outclassing Al Shabab 29-22 in the tournament final, played at a packed and vibrant BHF Arena in Umm Al Hassam.
Ahli were the aggressors from the throw-off, taking the lead early and forging a 16-10 cushion at the half.
Fuelled by the strong play of Ali Eid, Mohammed Hameed, Ali Mirza, and goalkeeper Salah Abduljalil, they then did well to hold on to their advantage over the remainder of the contest.
Shabab valiantly tried to stay in the fight and got to within three goals heading into the final 10 minutes, but Ahli replied right away with back-to-back conversions, and Shabab never recovered.
Following the game, Ahli and Shabab were presented their respective trophies and medals in an awarding ceremony by General Sports Authority CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar and BHF president Ali Issa.
With the result, Ahli became the first team other than Al Najma to win the BHF Cup since the 2016-17 season, which was also the last time they lifted the trophy.
Ahli qualified for last night’s final after edging past Al Tadhamun 36-35 in a thrilling last-four clash that went into a penalty shootout, while Shabab joined them after beating Najma 20-19 in their tightly contested encounter in the semi-finals.
