Dubai chocolate, stuffed with rich pistachio cream and shredded kunafa, gained popularity after a 2023 Tiktok video about the sweet treat went viral. It was viewed 120 million times, spurring a trend and causing sales for the confection to soar.
The immense sales numbers have caused an international pistachio shortage, with prices rising to $10.30 per pound (BD3.8) from the earlier $7.95.
Iran, the world's second largest producer of pistachio exported 40 per cent more pistachio to the UAE in the past six months than they have in the past year.
