Musandam - The Environment Authority has recorded its first-ever sighting of a Bryde's whale in Musandam Governorate since the launch of the Marine Mammal Species Survey Project in 2023.
The survey project has continued through five different phases.
Aida Khalaf Al Jabri, the project head, stated that this sighting marks a significant step in understanding the distribution of rare or previously undocumented marine species in Musandam, emphasising the importance of ongoing environmental surveys to protect Oman's biodiversity.
She added that the project represents a pioneering initiative that bridges fieldwork and scientific research, contributing to the development of a national database that supports Oman's efforts in marine conservation and sustainability for future generations.
The Bryde's whale is a medium-sized baleen whale, characterised by its long, streamlined body, bluish-grey colour, and three distinct ridges on its rostrum, distinguishing it from other whale species.
Known for its elusive behaviour and swift movements, this whale prefers warm waters and feeds on small fish and plankton using a "lunge-feeding" technique. It is typically seen alone or in small groups.
Notably, the sighting of a Bryde's whale serves as a sensitive biological indicator, reflecting the balance and health of the marine ecosystem, which is directly impacted by environmental changes and marine pollution.
