MOTORSPORT – FERRARI AF Corse won the 24 Hours of Le Mans yesterday in the closest finish to the world-famous race in over a decade.
The #50 crew of Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco, and Miguel Molina, driving their Ferrari 499P Hypercar, completed 311 laps as they took the chequered flag at the end of an action-packed event, which marked the fourth round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
It was the second year in a row a Ferrari AF Corse crew triumphed in France. In 2023, their win was claimed by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado, and Antonio Giovinazzi, who this time came third overall in their #51 Hypercar. They were 36.730s behind their triumphant teammates.
In between the two Ferraris and finishing just 14.211 seconds behind the victors were Toyota Gazoo Racing’s #7 trio of Jose Maria Lopez, Kamui Kobayashi, and Nyck de Vries, behind the wheel of their GR010-Hybrid contender.
Meanwhile, Manthey EMA’s #91 triumvirate of Richard Lietz, Morris Schuring, and Yasser Shahin took first place in the LMGT3 class. They completed 281 laps in their Porsche 911 GT3 R LMGT3 and were joined on their podium by Team WRT’s #31 crew of Augusto Farfus, Darren Leung, and Sean Gelael, behind the wheel of a BMW M4 LMGT3 car. The Proton Competition trio of Dennis Olsen, Mikkel Pedersen, and Giorgio Roda in their #88 Ford Mustang LMGT3 came third.
Taking first place amongst the LMP2 finishers were United Autosports’ #22 crew of Oliver Jarvis, Bijoy Garg, and Nolan Siegel. Inter Europol Competition’s #34 trio of Clement Novalak, Jakub Smiechowski, and Vladislav Lomko were second, with IDEC Sport’s #28 team of Job van Uitert, Paul Lafargue, and Reshad de Gerus finishing third. All three LMP2 cars posted totals of 297 laps in their identical Oreca 07-Gibson challengers.
