Twenty-one-year-old Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke started making waves on her first day as a member of the New Zealand parliament after she performed a Māori haka during an inaugural address. She also made history after becoming the youngest Member of Parliament in 170 years.
In her inaugural address, she pledged her commitment to her constituents, saying: “I will die for you ... but I will (also) live for you.” Her address went viral across social media all over the world. Maipi-Clarke first gained recognition last year when she performed a speech outside the steps of the parliament for the 50th anniversary of the Te Petihana, signifying ‘the petition’ where Māori groups advocated for national recognition.
