A 27-year-old university student had to be rescued from Mount Fuji in Japan for the second time in four days after he returned to look for his mobile phone.
The Chinese student, who lives in Japan, first had to be rescued by helicopter from Mount Fuji after he was unable to descend because he lost his crampons (a spiked device attached to the bottom of climbing shoes for better traction).
The student was on the Fujinomiya trail, located approximately 3,000 meters above sea level.
A few days later, the student went back to Mt. Fuji to retrieve his lost mobile phone and other belongings. He had to be rescued for a second time after he was unable to continue due to altitude sickness.
The student was safely brought back down and is now out of danger.
People are discouraged from attempting to climb Mt. Fuji outside of the official climbing season, which runs from early July to early September, due to harsh weather conditions.
During the off-season, all medical facilities along the trail are closed, and due to rapidly changing weather conditions, rescues are often delayed.
