Kuwaiti authorities apprehended a network of people involved in the controversial Ya Hala raffle fraud, which was broadcast live on the internet.
An investigation was launched into the raffle after a video of the draw went viral, suggesting cheating was at play. The video seemingly shows the person in charge of drawing the names concealing a card in his sleeve.
Investigations revealed that the individual in the video, Ahmed Al-Hamad, head of the raffle department in the Kuwaiti Commerce Ministry, has abused his position to rig multiple raffles organised by several companies.
The rigged winner of the raffle, an Egyptian woman, was subsequently arrested with her husband after discovering that she had fraudulently won five cars in prior raffles, and she gifted him two of them. They were apprehended at Kuwait International Airport while attempting to flee the country.
