KUWAIT - Kuwaitis celebrate Tuesday the 64th anniversary of the Kuwaiti National Day, where they reaffirm their unwavering loyalty to their country and its leadership, which remains dedicated to the nation's prosperity and security.
This occasion, which marks a defining moment in Kuwait's history, coincides with the liberation of Kuwait from the brutal Iraqi invasion, and in celebration, the country is adorned with vibrant displays of the Kuwaiti flag, creating a festive atmosphere.
His Highness the Amir Shaikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has consistently emphasised the importance of unity for a better future, and in his in his inaugural address following his constitutional oath before the National Assembly on December 20, 2023, he stressed the gravity of the challenges facing the nation, saying that upholding national unity is a must.
Kuwait's first National Day celebration took place on June 19, 1962, marked by a grand military parade at the old airport, attended by numerous officials and citizens in an atmosphere of joy and pride.
On that day, the late Amir Shaikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah delivered a speech, stating that Kuwait marks its first National Day with joy and steadfast determination, and that Kuwait would move forward to achieve prosperity and social justice.
Between 1962 and 1964, National Day was celebrated annually on June 19, however, on May 18, 1964, an Amiri decree merged National Day with the anniversary of the late Amir Shaikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah's accession, moving the celebration to February 25.
Since the independence in 1961, Kuwait has worked to strengthen its political system, and in 1962, a Constituent Assembly was formed to draft a constitution based on democratic principles reflecting Kuwait's realities and aspirations.
This constitution, approved by the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah - widely known as the Father of the Constitution - in November 1962, ushered in the era of constitutional legitimacy, and the first parliamentary elections followed on January 23, 1963.
Over the decades, Kuwait has achieved remarkable progress in comprehensive development, continuing the vision laid out by its forefathers and advanced by successive generations under the nation's wise leadership.

Kuwait has forged strong relations with neighboring and international partners while supporting global peace initiatives and upholding international law through organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the NonAligned Movement.
Since independence, Kuwait has also prioritized humanitarian aid and alleviating suffering worldwide, and this commitment was recognized in September 2014 when the UN honored the late Amir Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as a Global Humanitarian Leader and
designated Kuwait as an International Humanitarian Center.
