The Kuwaiti Nationality Investigation Department recently uncovered a bizarre decades-old fraud where a Kuwaiti woman falsely registered her son as her brother to obtain citizenship benefits.
The strange case occurred in 1996 when the Kuwaiti woman was married to a Saudi citizen who later divorced her. Unbeknownst to him, though, she was pregnant with his child and decided to collude with her father to register the child as his, making him legally her brother. This was to grant him Kuwaiti citizenship instead of his father's Saudi citizenship.
The fraud lasted for almost three decades before a recent investigation uncovered the scheme, leading to the arrest of both mother and son/brother. Both confessed after interrogation and DNA testing. The mother's father, however, managed to flee Kuwait before he could be arrested and prosecuted.
The case has been referred to public prosecution, and legal proceedings are underway with the mother's father's name circulating in Interpol for international arrest.
