HIGH DIVING – AROUND 40 of the world’s best high divers, representing more than a dozen countries from across the globe, are set to gather in Bahrain later this month to compete in the season-opener of the World Aquatics High Diving World Cup 2024.
The event, sponsored by GFH Financial Group, takes place September 21 and 22 in a special location at Bahrain Financial Harbour in Manama, and it will be the first time ever that a leading international high-diving competition will be held in the kingdom.
The high diving showcase is being staged under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
It follows an agreement between the BOC and World Aquatics, aquatic sports’ international governing body, to bring the exciting sport to the island.
It is not only set to be the maiden high diving event to take place in Bahrain, but it will also be the kingdom’s first-ever World Aquatics competition.
High divers from 16 nations are currently registered to be a part of the highly anticipated occasion. They will be flying the flags of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the US.
Bahrain will also be welcoming officials from around the world for the meeting, including a team from World Aquatics and participating technical delegates.
The high divers will be performing from platforms rising 27 meters high, which, at Bahrain Financial Harbour, will provide a stunning visual spectacle rising against the Manama city centre’s beautiful skyline.
The World Aquatics High Diving World Cup 2024 stop in Bahrain serves as a qualification event for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore next year. This first leg of the season will be followed by another event in Brazil, scheduled to take place from October 11 to 13.
Earlier this year, BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji signed an agreement with World Aquatics president Husain Al Musallam to organise the kingdom’s event.
In the presence of Shaikh Khalid, BOC also signed an agreement with GFH Financial Group in May to sponsor the meeting. Al Kooheji penned the deal with GFH COO Salah Sharif.
Next year’s World Aquatics Championships will take place from July 11 to August 3 in Singapore, with 75 medal events being held. The worlds will be putting on a display of the world’s top athletes across six aquatic sports, namely swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming, open water swimming, and high diving.
