FOOTBALL – THE inaugural edition of the Khalid Bin Hamad Football Cup, featuring a grand prize of BD50,000 for the winning team, kicks off next week.
The dates of this all-new national competition have been announced by the Bahrain Football Association (BFA). It will be held under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
It will feature the top four clubs from the 2023-24 season of the Nasser Bin Hamad Bahrain Premier League – champions Al Khaldiya, Riffa, Muharraq, and Al Ahli.
In the opening game on Wednesday next week, Al Ahli take on Riffa and then the following evening Khaldiya face off with Muharraq. Both games are scheduled for 7pm kick-offs at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Isa Town.
The winners of the two contests will then face off in the final on January 28 at a to-be-determined venue.
In the case of a tie at the end of 90 minutes in any of the games, the matches will go into extra-time and, if needed, a penalty shootout.
