BRAVE CF 68’s main event has caught the eye of hardcore fans, as Joilton Lutterbach and Mihail Cotruta both have fighting styles that could mean a grappling masterclass or a stand-up war when they meet in BRAVE Combat Federation’s interim super lightweight world title tomorrow in Dusseldorf, Germany.
This is a layered battle with reputation and legacy at stake as two global combat sports forces collide. Lutterbach is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt and Cotruta a World Combat Sambo bronze medallist and a Master of Sports in Combat Sambo. With Lutterbach also being a blackbelt in Judo and Luta-livre, it makes for an even more compelling battle, and it will be interesting to see whether Cotruta can blanket and subdue the artillery of his Brazilian opponent – who has 13 submissions on record.
BRAVE’s number-one ranked super lightweight Lutterbach is a six-promotion multi-division MMA champion and a two-promotion K-1 champion. He has amassed 26 knockouts in his career. And his striking prowess was showcased in his debut when he shut down former super lightweight number one Marcel Grabinski at BRAVE 61 in August.
Lutterbach is such a student of the game that when he is not inside the cage, he is refining his skill set in other disciplines. Since his debut, he partook in Muay Thai and Kickboxing, where he secured wins against Slovakia’s Sebastian Fapso and the Netherlands’ Mark Trijsburg, respectively.
On paper, Cotruta may be known for his Combat Sambo accolades, but it’s impossible to reduce his qualities as a fighter to this accomplishment. He’s also a heavy-handed striker, having nine KOs in his 14 professional wins. Even when the number-two ranked super lightweight beats his opponents by submission it’s his hands that lead the way – just as what happened at BRAVE 60.
He almost knocked out former lightweight champion Luan Santiago, one of the best strikers in BRAVE history, before locking in an arm triangle for the submission victory, reiterating just how dangerous he is as a complete fighter. Cotruta is no fan of working overtime, and his transitioning and level change is something to be admired.
So the question remains, will it be a stand-up war or a gladiatorial grappling masterclass as these fighters battle for a shot at the 165-pound champion, Eldar Eldarov.
BRAVE 68 is the final show on the 2022 calendar. It follows the success achieved by BRAVE 61 / NFC 10, which took place in Bonn.
