Two former Kuwaiti MPs convicted in absentia of storming the National Assembly are set to return from Istanbul, Turkey, Al Qabas newspaper reported.
Runaway convicts Mubarak Al Waalan and Faisal Al Musallam announced that they would return “within a few hours” to surrender themselves to the judicial authorities.
“I am returning to Kuwait along with Dr Faisal Al Musallem, Dr Ahmed Al Dhaidi and Abdulaziz Bouhameed to surrender to the authorities,” said Al Waalan on his twitter account.
They were among other incumbent and former MPs as well as citizens who were sentenced to jail for storming Kuwait’s National Assembly.
The Court of Appeal overturned a ruling acquitting the defendants and sentenced them all from five to seven years in prison.
In December 2013, the lower court acquitted 70 opposition activists, including nine former MPs, of charges of storming the parliament building on November 16, 2011.
The Court of Appeal overturned the ruling and convicted the defendants of storming a public building, assaulting police, resisting orders and damaging public property.
