Swimming – Four swimmers have made history by successfully completing the Bahrain Swim Challenge.
A ceremony was held yesterday to honour the athletes – Bahrain Aquatics Federation president Abdulla Atiyah, board member Fatima Al Mahmeed, Saudi swimmer Mariam Bin Laden and Scottish-Australian marathon swimmer Donaldson Andrew - who swam a total distance of 180km, surpassing the original target of 170km, in 59 hours, 59 minutes, and 6.52 seconds.
The medal ceremony, held at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa, was attended by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee President Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Shaikh Khalid praised the athletes for successfully completing the challenge, affirming that the accomplishment reflected their high spirits and tremendous determination.
“The champions of this challenge have proven that with resolve and willpower, obstacles can be overcome,” said Shaikh Khalid.
“What they achieved is not just a sporting feat – it’s an inspiring message to all youth about the power of determination and the importance of ambition.
“Bahrain’s hosting of such unique sporting initiatives further enhances the nation’s standing in the regional and international sports scene. I wish all the swimmers continued success and excellence.”
The swimmers expressed their pride and honour in completing the challenge, confirming that the strong support from Shaikh Khalid motivated them to achieve the goal.
The challenge officially kicked off on Wednesday morning at 4am, with the four swimmers dividing up the trek among themselves.
The four-part marathon began at Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and Spa, with the athletes taking a counter-clockwise path around the country. The swim path took the swimmers through Bahrain Bay and other landmarks.
The swim was livestreamed online, and official observers followed the swimmers throughout the whole journey, both to ensure their safety and to document the challenge.
Swimmers undertook the challenge under close technical and physical supervision, with direct support from medical and organisational teams to ensure the highest levels of safety.
This initiative was part of a series of inspirational sports projects launched by Shaikh Khalid, aimed at showcasing national talent, fostering determination and resilience, and encouraging Bahraini youth to take on unique experiences, including in the sporting field.
