CUE SPORTS – Bahraini billiards stars Haider Maroom and Nahla Al Sunni captured the gold medals in their respective categories yesterday in the West Asian Billiards Championship, currently being hosted by the kingdom.
Maroom secured the title in the juniors’ nine-ball singles competition while Al Sunni claimed her crown in the women’s nine-ball singles.
Maroom was a 9-4 winner in his final against Kuwait’s Mohammad Al Hussainan, while Al Sunni triumphed after defeating Manal Al Qallaf, also of Kuwait, 7-1 in their final.
Both Maroom and Al Sunni will now be going for another gold medal in their respective 10-ball singles competitions today.
Maroom has a bye for the opening round-of-16 stage and will be facing the winner of the match between Oman’s Hashim Al Musawi and Saudi Arabia’s Ibrahim Al Aswed.
Other Bahraini entrants are Hassan Yousef, who will be facing Hussainan in the first round; Mahmoud Yaseen, who will be playing Salman Al Zaani; and Faisal Al Malki, who will be taking on Saudi’s Raqan Al Baqmi.
Matches in both the round-of-16 and last eight are to be played race to five.
For Al Sunni, she will be facing Shaima Al Zair of Kuwait in her round-of-16 clash. The winner will move on to face the victor of the contest between Al Qallaf and Bahraini Ayesha Buhaza.
Other players on home turf are Fatima Rajab, who will be taking on Jode Bukhari of Saudi in the opening phase; May Al Doseri, who will be playing Taiba Faraj of Kuwait; Amani Saleh, who will be facing Raula Ashur of Saudi; and Jode Majed, who will be going up against Rehab Shakri, also of Saudi.
