HORSERACING – PIZ Nair lifted the Late Mr Abdulla Ahmed Nass Cup, sponsored by Nass Corporation and AA Nass and Sons, held yesterday as the feature event at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
The race took place as part of the 27th meeting of the 2024-25 national horseracing season, and it featured eight races, held as part of an exciting second day of the REHC’s Eid Al Fitr Festival.
PIZ Nair triumphed in the 1,400 metre event for imported horses, held as the second challenge of yesterday’s card. It offered a whopping BD10,000 in prize money, and PIZ Nair took the lion’s share for owners Al Adiyat Racing and trainer AM Smith, with jockey Abdulrahim Jasim in the saddle.
The four-year-old gelding secured first place with a full length’s gap from runner-up Juantorena, competing for Victorious, Fawzi Nass, and Husain Makki. Army Ethos came third for Victorious and Fawzi Nass, Nass, and Arnaud de Lepine, while Pure Dreamer was fourth for Al Adiyat, Smith, and Lee Newman.
Three other cups were up for the taking yesterday at REHC.
Devaste won the Sarens Nass Cup in the evening’s seventh and penultimate event, held for imported runners over 1,000m with a BD4,000 prize money.
Devaste competed for Al Mohamediya, Osama Hashim, and Soufiane Saadi. The six-year-old gelding triumphed by a half-length from Rebel At Dawn, who finished second for Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Adel Abdulla, and Marcialis Jaures.
Labalaba was third for Shaikh Isa bin Duaij bin Salman bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Nass, and Makki, while in fourth to collect the last portion of the prize money was Inveigle, racing for Sayed Jawad Marzooq, Mahmood Jawad, and Ahmed Maki.
Bleak secured victory in race six to capture the Royal Golf Club Cup. The five-year-old gelding competed for owner Abdulla Fawzi Nass, trainer Fawzi Nass, and Makki, and won across the 2,400m distance to claim the largest share of the BD4,000 prize. Tartan Chief was second for Al Mohamediya, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Saadi; Laser Guided came third for Victorious, Yousif Taher, and Ebrahim Nader; and Elwasme was fourth for Al Mohamediya, Abdulmajeed, and Hussain Asghar.
In the day’s fourth race, Be Lucky My Son came away with the Applied Science University Cup. Racing over 1,800m with BD3,000 in winnings, the six-year-old gelding triumphed with Makki in the saddle for Bin Isaan Racing and Nass. Battyeford Boy finished second for Abdulla Al Gaoud, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Jasim; while Fleet Admiral came third for Hasan Mohamed Al Doseri, Ali Jan, and Nader. Speedtail took fourth place for Ali Jaafar Darwish, Jaffar Darwish, and Adnan Jaffar.
Elsewhere on yesterday’s card, Al Ma’anagy 1919 won race one for Victorious, Taher, and Jasim; Al Nayelah took race three for Shaikh Salman bin Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, Kuwaiti, and Jasim; Lyra triumphed in race five for Sayed Hadi Habib Mohsen, Abdulmajeed, and Asghar; and Coiled And Ready won race eight for Victorious, Smith, and Franky Vanhonsebrouck. The two-day Eid Al Fitr Festival was held as part of the Eid Al Fitr celebrations. The programme included several night races held under REHC’s bright floodlights.
