HORSERACING – QASEEM lifted the Horse Welfare Authority Cup last night to headline the 20th meeting of the season at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
In attendance for the eight-race event were Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Supreme Council for Environment vice-president, Supreme Council for Youth and Sport member, and REHC deputy chairman Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa.
Qaseem, a three-year-old colt, triumphed for owners Al Afoo Racing and trainer Jaber Ramadhan, with jockey Connor Beasley in the saddle.
Qaseem won by a neck from runner-up Labalaba, competing for Shaikh Isa bin Duaij bin Salman bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, Fawzi Nass, and Husain Makki; while Buffer Zone came third for Victorious Racing, Nass, and Stephane Ladjadj.
Finishing fourth in the 1,200m feature race and taking the final share of the BD5,000 total prize was The Thin Blue Line, racing for Al Mohamediya Racing, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Andrew Breslin.
In last night’s sixth race, held over 2,400m with BD3,000 in winnings, Signalman claimed a dominant triumph for Victorious, Nass, and Makki to clinch the HH Shaikh Sultan bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup.
The four-year-old gelding won by eight lengths ahead of Monty Bay, who finished second for Al Mallah Racing and Abduljaleel Al Mallah, with Ladjadj in the saddle. Tartan Chief was third for Mohamediya, Abdulmajeed, and Hasan Al Saffar; while Fleet Admiral came fourth for Hasan Mohamed Al Doseri, Ali Jan, and Ebrahim Nader.
Another HH Shaikh Sultan bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup was up for the taking yesterday in the first race. Mlolshan 1865 was the winner over 1,400m for Victorious, Yousif Taher, and Abdulrahim Jasim, taking the lion’s share of the BD2,000 prize.
The six-year-old won by a neck against Al Hamdany 1810 to make it a one-two for Victorious and Taher, with Salem Alajmi in the saddle. Al Krush 1854 finished third for Al Sakhir, Jaffar Marzooq, and Makki; while fourth was Al Suwaity M1063, competing for Mohamediya, Abdulmajeed, and Hussain Asghar.
Elsewhere yesterday, Maximum Impact won the HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in race two for Zari Al Afoo Racing, Sayed Jaafar Isa, and Rosie Jessop; Call To Court won the HH Shaikh Mohamed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in race three for Al Adiyat Racing, AM Smith, and Lee Newman; Night Lantern won the HH Shaikh Mohamed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in race four for M and E Racing, Smith, and Asghar; Lyra lifted the HH Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Salman Al Khalifa Cup in race five for Sayed Hadi Habib Mohsen, Abdulmajeed, and Asghar; and Western took the HH Shaikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup for the Mohamediya-Abdulmajeed-Asghar triumvirate in race seven.
