20 breathtaking photos from Nat Geo's Nature Photographer of the Year Contest

Nat Geo has released the final selection of entries for their magazine, here are some we chose.

By December a new Nat Geo nature photographer winner will be announced.

Other than winning the contest the winner would also get a 10-day trip for two to Galapagos Island with National Geographic Expeditions.

The winner will also get two 15-minute portfolio reviews with photos editors at National Geographic.

There are four categories for this year Landscape, Environmental Issues, Action, and Animal Portraits.

Enjoy these amazing breathtaking photos that have made to the final round.

Title: I am Angry

We arrived at one of the watering holes in Etosha National Park in the late evening. Four lions were devouring a large kudu that they killed.

A pack of hyenas appeared from the bush nearby attracted by the smell of blood. What ensued was a fight for the dead kudu between four female lions and 16 hyenas. In the end, the hyenas won and got the prized kudu.

Title: Movement and Stillness

Brooks Falls is a special place that you can view Alaska brown bears in close proximity. The bears come to the falls and try to catch salmon runing upsteam and seagulls feed on bear leftover. I intentionally shot this image with low shutter speed to capture the movement of the rapid and hoped to show dynamic of the bear & bird and rapid in this still image. Hopefully, it tells a better story in this special habitat.

Title: Booted Racket-tail Flight Star Formation

The booted racket-tail, with it's two elongated tail feathers adorned with iridescent coloured paddles, are not often photographed with the spread apart. Of the thousands of images I have taken of this species, I was pleasantly surprised to have made this capture as the subject flew away from a nectar-rich bloom.

An African Buffalo full of mud late in the afternoon in the Masai Mara, Kenya. A different portrait for this powerful animal.

Title: Cheetah Locomotion

This mischievous young Cheetah was enjoying the cool morning with his brother and watchful mum nearby. Their playful nature made for some interesting poses as they ran. I used a slow shutter technique to help convey their energy.

Title: Mount Doom

Klyuchevskoy eruption of the volcano. When you watch this amazing spectacle, it you feel like a little hobbit who goes to the "Mount Doom"

Title: Whispy waspy eye

Our vehicle closely surrounded by elephant waiting to water at Somalisa Pan. The animals were very close so I was forced to look for fine detail with the 400mm lens. I chose a glowing eye of a mature female elephant. I reduced exposure compensation to -0.7 to ensure the dark areas remained true. I chose f5.6 to blur the ear and 1/500 to freeze the wasp.

Title: The Eye

Approaching shelfcloud of a high precipitation supercell on May 23rd 2016 8pm near Bautzen in Germany. The greenish colour of the rain curtain signified hail (hen egg sized ones fell from the sky). Shot in Bloaschütz, Saxony, Germany.

Title: The Phoenix

At the end of every winter,farmers of this huge grassland burn the grass and reed to clean the land for upcoming crop.When the fire spreads across the land,It destroys habitat of many birds and insects.As the fire progresses through the grassland all the grassland birds fly for shelter and small insects start coming out but Black Drongo acts differently! The brave Drongo starts capitalising on such a moment by eating insects flying on the live fire.The brave bird reminds me the legend of Phoenix

Title: Confrontation

A White-tailed eagle swoops in on a Hokkaido red fox to set it straight for stealing a fish. This confrontation happened out on frozen Lake Fuhren in Hokkaido, Japan. The fox escaped with the fish.

Eye to eye with a Northern gannet along the coast of Scotland.

A crested gecko clears its eyes from the monsoon rains that manage to pierce the canopy above in Nouméa, Province Sud, New Caledonia.

Title: Summer Solstice

The above photo captures two rock climbers reaching the summit of a 350 ft. tall sandstone spire in the Fisher Towers of eastern Utah. By my calculations, the formation is silhouetted by the moon only two or three nights per year. As the photo was taken from over a mile away, the angle between the camera and climbers had to align perfectly. I prepared for the shot for months, climbed the tower numerous times, and even fully surveyed the summit to guarantee the angles were correct. They were! The shot was taken in Moab, Utah, United States.

Title: The Flying Hook

When you're witness of scenes like this, something stirs in your interior. You feel equal or more injured than the animal itself, having a deep feeling of suffering. I really had an intense need to try to reach the poor gull and release it from its hook. Because you're aware its life is in serious danger and that situation will lead it inevitably to a next death. Hopefully soon there will be a day when human beings can be reconciled with its natural surroundings.

Title: Face to Face

One of the larger insects with impressive compound eyes, chasing this swift insect to capture a front profile was a challenge lasting almost 60 minutes. the fine line between being as close as possible with a macro lens and its working distance was a pure trial and error. The shot was taken in Inaukina, Central Province, Papua New Guinea.

Title: Mantis Portrait

After a long hike, my dad realised he'd lost his glasses, so we trekked back and spent a good hour and a half looking for them.

I saw something glinting in the underbrush, and there they were. Right next to them was this mantis, which so kindly posed for a portrait.

Title: Blood Moon Eclipse and Old Faithful

What are the odds of Old Faithful erupting as the Super Blood Moon of September 2015 enter maximum eclipse??? Well, the odds were pretty good last September when I captured this image. The next opportunity to photography a Super Blood Moon eclipse like this is 2033, but will the weather be good? I guess we will have to wait and see. A full year of planning can really do a photo good sometimes.

Title: Mother Ostrich

A mother ostrich is watching over her chicks in the savannahs of Africa.

Title: Two Plus Four seven

We were camping on 3 m thick frozen sea water, just 1.5 miles away from a big emperor penguin colony, with lots of mega cute chicks. I concentrated especially on taking images of the adorable chicks in the harsh conditions of their environment. The image shows several emperor penguin chicks in front of adult penguins to shield from the forces of the storm.

Title: Hummingbird

A baby humming bird found his way into my home. He was a bit stunned so I let him recoup on our front porch. While waiting for his nectar to cool I captured a few images of him as he came back to his own.

Title: Aladdin's Cave

Snow cave on the slopes of the volcano Mutnovsky, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Due to global warming, glaciers have begun to decline.

As a result, the ceiling of the cave has become thin and the sunlight creates a wonderful picture with different colours.

Title: Illusion

Zebras are extremely frisky and very difficult to get close to.

I was extremely lucky when I came across this lone zebra in the Namutoni Plains of Etosha National Park. He stood still like a rock and stared right at me through the lens.

The fleeting moment gave me a very rare opportunity to capture the close-up of the near perfect symmetrical stripes of this beautiful animal.
