HORSERACING – Goemon triumphed in The Bahrain Mile yesterday – the feature race of meeting 17 at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Competing for owner Mohammed Khalid Abdulrahim and trainer Haider Ebrahim, jockey Alberto Sanna rode the six-year-old to first place in the 1,600m event for imported horses, which carried a cool BD15,000 total prize.
Supreme Council for Environment vice-president, REHC deputy chairman, and Supreme Council for Youth and Sport member Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa was in attendance during yesterday’s events.
Goemon won by a length-and-a-quarter ahead of runner-up Pure Dreamer, running for Al Adiyat Racing, AM Smith, and Lee Newman. Mehmento finished third for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and Fayos Martin Borja, while Dear My Friend was fourth for owners Middleham Park Racing XXV and Michael Lai and trainer Charlie Johnston, with jockey Joe Fanning in the saddle.
The Bahrain Mile was the third event on yesterday’s nine-race card at REHC.
Sanna also triumphed in the day’s other big race, the Porsche Cup, which was the final event where he competed on Qaseem.
The three-year-old colt was running for owners Al Afoo Racing and trainer Jaber Ramadhan, and Sanna steered him to first place after 1,000m to claim the lion’s share of the BD5,000 prize.
Qaseem triumphed by a neck from runner-up Thunder Moor, competing for Al Mohamediya Racing, Fawzi Nass, and Andrew Breslin. Rebel at Dawn was third for Al Adiyat Racing, Smith, and Joe Fanning, while Kaasib came fourth for Al Mohamediya, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Hasan Al Saffar.
In yesterday’s fifth race, held over 2,000m with a BD3,000 in winnings, Gamraan won the REHC Cup for Al Mohamediya, Osama Hashim, and Hussain Asghar.
Firth of Clyde was second for Al Hoora Racing, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Abdulrahim Jasim, while Double Jump came third for Al Mohamediya, Hashim, and Breslin. Sabriel finished fourth to also come away with prize money for owner Mohammed Khalid Abdulrahim and trainer Ebrahim, with Sanna as the jockey.
Also yesterday, Al Saqlawieh 1932 captured the Al Sakhir Cup for Victorious, Yousif Taher, and Abdulrahim Jasim in race one covering 1,400m with BD1,500 in winnings; while Nine Below Zero took The Jockey Club Cup for the Al Afoo-Ramadhan-Borja triumvirate in race seven, held over a 1,200m straight with a BD2,000 total prize.
Elsewhere, Atlal won race two for Al Mohamediya, Abdulmajeed, and Asghar; Llama A La Mente triumphed in race four for Victorious, Smith, and Marcialis Jaures; Shgardi won race six for Al Afoo-Ramadhan-Borja; and Scapegoat won race eight competing for the Al Adiyat-Smith-Newman connections.
