TENNIS – SPANISH wild card Oscar Casas Mas barged into the boys’ singles semi-finals yesterday in the J30 Isa Town International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
The competition is a part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors 2025 calendar.
Oscar booked his place in the last four after defeating Emre Atlamis of Turkiye 6-3, 6-2 in their round-of-eight clash.
Oscar will next face off with Italian qualifier Tommaso Rosso in the semis. Tommaso was a 6-2, 7-6 (4) winner against Kaushik Arunkumar of India yesterday.
The other boys’ semi-final is an all-Russian affair between fifth seed Artem Svetlov and Nikita Berdin.
Artem defeated France’s Sacha Fontanges 7-6 (6), 6-4 to march through yesterday, while Nikita upset second seed Amir Jaber of Jordan 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
On the distaff, top seed Chenming Zhang of China continued her fine run in the competition with a 6-0, 6-2 win over eighth seed Daria Podlipskaya of Russia to make it through to the final four.
Chenming will next take on sixth seed Ema Chladova of the Czech Republic, who triumphed 6-0, 6-0 against Agata Konarska of Poland.
Fourth-seeded Russian Milana Kolesova and seventh-seeded Egyptian Sara Dessouky lock horns in the other match of this stage. Milana defeated Camilla Mizzi of Italy 6-3, 6-3 to advance, while Sara was leading 4-0 in the first set when second seed Leanne Abouhamad of Australia retired from their match.
Meanwhile, the boys’ doubles semi-finals will see top seeds Petr Lifanov of Russia and Mustafa Ege Topbas of Turkiye face Kousuke Ko of Chinese Taipei and Seungjun Min of South Korea, and Sacha with partner Ahmed Ibrahim of Egypt play Tommaso and Aidan Tait of Canada.
In the girls’ doubles, number one seeds Sara and Saiyette Varadkar of India will take on third seeds Katsiaryna Dubik and Daria of Russia, while fourth seeds Ema and Camilla will face Daniela Esina and Alisa Grushkevich of Russia.
All the boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles semi-final matches are scheduled for today, starting from 10am and continuing until the afternoon. All are welcome to attend and watch the action. Entry to the BTF is free.
This week’s J30 Isa Town tournament continues until tomorrow. It will be followed by another J30 ITF competition from Monday next week to February 15.
