TENNIS – THE fourth edition of the Ministry of Interior Bahrain Tennis Challenger gets underway today at the Public Security Officers Club in Gudaibiya, with the participation of a number of the world’s top professional players.
Organised by the Public Security Sports Association (PSSA), the competition’s general supervisor Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa announced yesterday the launch of the event.
Shaikh Khalid announced details of the tournament during a Press conference last night, during which the draw was held and the new logo was unveiled.
Shaikh Khalid expressed his appreciation for the support and instructions of Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, who has contributed to the success of hosting the tournament in Bahrain for the fourth consecutive year, promoting the kingdom’s status as a destination for major sports events and a supporter of international sport.
Shaikh Khalid pointed out that the tournament won the Best Asia-Pacific Championship Award from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), reflecting the event’s high organisational steps and professionalism.
He affirmed that all logistical and technical preparations have been finalised to ensure the success of the tournament, in which all capabilities and resources have been allocated.
Shaikh Khalid added that per the dedication of the organising committee to enhance the tournament’s level, ‘Hawk-Eye’ technology will be introduced in the competition. It is used in Grand Slam tournaments to enhance the accuracy of refereeing and adds a professional dimension.
PSSA president and the tournament’s organising committee chairman Brigadier Khalid Al Khayat said that the tournament has succeeded in attracting top-ranked players for this year. He said that the tournament is developing annually.
ATP supervisor Valery Lutkov congratulated Bahrain and the Ministry of Interior on the competition and on winning its prestigious award. He said that the tournament has become a prominent part of the ATP calendar for its ongoing successes, its organisational level, and intense competitions.
