HORSERACING – BAHRAIN’S Hussain Asghar finished an impressive fifth in an international horserace in France as he made national sporting history by becoming the first-ever jockey trained at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) to compete at the global level.
The 21-year-old raced at the ‘Prix Together for Racing International – European Association of Racing Schools Final’, run at Deauville Racecourse in Normandy, France.
He competed riding his horse On A Souffert, owned by Antoine Sauty de Chalon and trained by Philippe Van De Poele.
Mehgaway, owned by Sofean Ghys and ridden by Leonard Plommee, took first place in the flat, 2,500-metre event. Prescy Liia finished as the runner-up for Barthelemy Vives ridden by Austin Aubrey Adams, while Falwukair Laujac came third for Eric Martin with jockey Ertugrul Cankilic in the saddle. Classified just ahead of Asghar was Checkpoint Charlie, owned by Stephane Cerulis and ridden by Andrea Ricupa.
Asghar was nominated for the race by REHC on account of the outstanding progress he made since he started training to be a jockey in 2021. He is recognised as one of the most talented young riders born in Bahrain, appearing in close to 100 rides last season, which included the prestigious Al Methaq Mile. He has taken nine wins to date in his career.
