GOLF – Two international golfers, who have travelled to the kingdom for the first time, are looking forward to making an impression in the DP World Tour – Bahrain Championship which starts today at the Royal Golf Club (RGC).
Rising British star Alex Fitzpatrick, 25, and seasoned French pro Michael Lorenzo-Vera, 39, arrived in Bahrain on Monday night, hoping to register their first wins on the DP World Tour.
Fitzpatrick, the younger brother of 2022 US Open winner Matt (who is also competing in the Bahrain Championship), has made rapid strides on the professional circuit since turning pro in June 2022 and won his first major championship last August when he triumphed in the British Challenge.
“This is my first time in Bahrain so it is nice to experience new things,” he said.
“It is, hopefully, going to be a good week. I did a little bit of research before I came. The RGC looks like a great course.”
Fitzpatrick, who is in his first DP World Tour season, added that he was excited to be playing in the Bahrain Championship.
“I am excited to go out there,” he said.
“My game is getting more consistent, which is great.
“Obviously I am still looking for the top 10s and top. That is the ideal scenario.
“I am very lucky. I have a great team around me, a lot of people pushing me and challenging me to get better every day.”
Lorenzo-Vera, who turned pro at the age of 20 in 2005 and notched up the first of his four Alps Tour wins later that same year before clinching a title each in the Challenge Tour (2007) and French Tour (2009), told the GDN that he was looking forward to putting his talent to the test on the newly-refurbished RGC course.
“It’s going to be a big challenge! But I’m here to win, so let’s see what happens.”
