Legendary Danish golfer Thomas Bjorn says he’s glad that the DP World Tour will hold a Bahrain Championship next month and that he has fond memories of his time in the kingdom in 2011 when the last DP World Tour event was held at the Royal Golf Club (RGC).
The DP World Tour – Bahrain Championship will be held at the Royal Golf Club from February 1 to 4.
“I’m just glad we’re back in Bahrain,” Bjorn, 52, who is the most successful Danish golfer of all time with 15 wins worldwide on the European Tour, said yesterday in Dubai where he is playing in the DP World Tour’s Dubai Invitational.
Bjorn, nicknamed ‘The Great Dane’, also captained the victorious European team at the 2018 Ryder Cup and played in the Volvo Golf Champions, which was a DP World Tour tournament, at the RGC in 2011.
“I have fond memories of what it was like back then and I’m quite sure that, in the 13 years since a lot of things have happened and I’m looking forward to going back there and seeing the progression of the country, the progression of golf in Bahrain and to try and be a part of making that part of our story.

“I go back, all the time, to making the game global. We have an opportunity now to touch every country. As we have grown, we’ve also been a big part of growing golf in the Middle East, especially in the UAE.
“Now we have an opportunity to be part of growing the game in Bahrain. I think that’s the responsibility of the professional game. To be able to make sure that we leave a footprint on the game and grow it in the places we’re lucky enough to be invited to play.”
Bjorn headlines a stellar field of some of the world’s top golfers who will compete in the Bahrain Championship.
Fellow Dane Rasmus Hojgaard, who has four DP World Tour Titles, is also on that list with along with Spanish star Pablo Larrazabal and Frenchman Romain Langasque. The field also includes rising English stars Dan Bradbury, Alex Fitzpatrick, Jordan Smith as well as Yannik Paul, the highly-touted German.
