Vera Liddel, the 66-year-old food service director of a south Chicago school is accused of stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings.
Liddel who has been at the school for over a decade reportedly stole 11,000 cases of chicken wings during the pandemic when children weren't allowed to be at school.
“Even though the children were learning remotely, the school district continued to provide meals for the students that their families could pick up,” read a court document.
The document further accuses Liddel of ordering the 11,000 cases of chicken wings from the school food provider and then picking it up in a school district van.
Liddel was eventually caught after a mid-year audit revealed that the school was $300,000 over it's annual food budget, despite being only halfway through the academic year.
Investigators found several individual invoices singed by Liddel for massive quantities of chicken, even though chicken was never served to the students due to the presence of bones.
