Saudi Arabia’s first female international referee, Anoud al-Asmari, has been appointed as the country's referee in the Gulf Cup, making her the first female to hold the position.
Ms Al-Asmari, who became the first Saudi female referee to receive the international badge from the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), said she was "happy to be the first Saudi female referee to receive the international badge in the history of Saudi sports”.
The women’s team was officially established in 2019 by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, hosting 450 registered players, 49 qualified referees and more than 900 coaches.
The kingdom has also submitted its bid to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in December.
