American gothic horror film Nosferatu is out now in theatres.
Written and directed by Robert Eggers, the remake of the namesake 1992 silent film tells the story of the terrifying vampire Count Orlok, aka Nosferatu (played by Bill Skarsgård), who is infatuated with Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp,) the wife of his estate agent Thomas (Nicholas Hoult). The story reveals the torment this unfortunate obsession causes.
“She’s an outsider. She has this understanding about the shadow side of life that is very deep, but she doesn’t have language for that. She’s totally misunderstood and no one can see her,” director Robert said in an interview, describing the protagonist Ellen.
“Because of this gift, in her teenage years, she ends up reaching out to this demon lover, this vampire, who is the one being who can connect with that side of her, but then that other, sensual world is connected to this evil force, which only increases her shame,” he added.
The original German silent film titled Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is an unauthorised and unofficial adaptation of the 1897 classic novel Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker.
One of the changed details from the original material include Count Dracula being renamed as Nosferatu, which is an outdated Romanian word for ‘vampire’.
