Mumbai: A 29-year-old merchant navy officer has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and her paramour at Kamothe in Navi Mumbai, police said.
Accused Dhruvkant Thakur surrendered before police and was subsequently arrested for the alleged crime that took place early on Wednesday.
The victims were identified as Dhruv's 24-year-old wife Sushmita and her lover Ajaykumar Singh (27), police said adding that after the murder, the accused had also tried to kill himself.
According to police, Dhruvkumar and Sushmita had been living separately since the past few months and Sushmita had handed over the divorce papers to him through an advocate.
"The incident took place at a flat in sector 19 of Kamothe in Navi Mumbai, where three of them were present. After an argument with Ajay, Dhruvkant lost his temper and slit Ajay's throat with a knife killing him on the spot and smothered his wife with a pillow," a police officer said.
"After the double murder, Dhruv came down at the entrance of the apartment around 6 am (on Wednesday) holding the blood-stained knife and clothes. The watchman of the building was aghast to see Dhruvkant in such a condition," he added.
The accused has been booked under section 302 (murder) of IPC and further investigation into the case is on.
"During panchnama, we found a 'suicide' note allegedly written by Thakur. He wrote he had killed his wife and her paramour and was ending his life too. Thakur had tried to hang himself from the ceiling fan in the hall with a necktie. But the tie broke and his attempt came a cropper. Thakur called up his sister, who stays in Airoli, and told her about the murders and that he was committing suicide. His sister informed the Kamothe police, who found Thakur sitting outside the building's gate," said sub-inspector J Parte.
"The building's watchman is the witness who was the first person to see Thakur in blood-stained clothes as he climbed down the building staircase and squatted outside the main gate," said Police inspector (Crime Branch Unit-2) Adikrao Pol.
Building watchman Kamal Singh, 24, said, "I have been working here for four years. The deceased man (Singh) used to frequently visit the flat where the woman was staying alone on rent for the past seven months. She claimed Singh was a relative and he was allowed to go upstairs without making an entry in the visitors' register. On Wednesday around 5am, Thakur came down the stairs in his bloody clothes. When I asked what happened, he told me he had committed two murders in the flat and asked me to inform the police."
