VOLLEYBALL – Newly crowned Isa bin Rashid Bahrain Volleyball League champions Muharraq will be going up against some of the region’s biggest clubs in their upcoming historic participation in the AVC Men’s Champions League next month.
Having secured the 2024-25 national title on Monday night, Muharraq have earned the right to represent the kingdom and join 11 other champion teams from across the continent in the prestigious Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) competition, which will be held in Japan from May 11 to 18.
For the AVC Men’s Champion League’s preliminary stage, Muharraq are in Pool D alongside West Asian champions Al Rayyan of Qatar and Sport Training Centre Three of Vietnam.
Pool A features the Suntory Sunbirds Osaka of Japan, the Queensland Pirates of Australia, and Aqtobe VC of Kazakhstan; Pool B is composed of Osaka Bluteon of Japan, the Shanghai Bright Men’s Volleyball Club of China, and Cignal HD Spikers of the Philippines; and Pool C comprises Iran Volleyball Club of Iran, Taichung Bank of Chinese Taipei, and Nakhon Ratchasima QminC VC of Thailand.
The AVC Men’s Champions League offers a cool $50,000 in prize money. Two berths will also be up for grabs for the 2025 FIVB Club World Championship, which is set to be held in December of this year.
The group matches in the AVC Men’s Champions League will be held from May 11 to 13. The top two from each division will then move on to the quarter-finals, which will be played on May 15 and 16. The semi-finals will follow the day after, and then the gold medal match will take place on the tournament’s concluding day on May 18.
Prior to their campaign in Japan, Muharraq will first compete for another domestic trophy: the His Royal Highness the Crown Prince’s Cup.
They will be getting their tournament bid underway tomorrow in a quarter-final clash with Bani Jamra. Should they make it to the last four, which will be played in best-of-three format, their series will begin on Saturday.
