GOLF – CLOSE to 100 players of various nationalities are set to hit the browns at Awali Golf Club (AGC) today and tomorrow for the 60th Bahrain Open and the 36th Bahrain Ladies Open golf championships.
The pair of 36-hole stroke-play tournaments are being held over the weekend at AGC, first opened in 1937 and today the oldest golf club in the Gulf.
Play in today’s first round is scheduled to get underway at 6am.
The men’s open tournament is set to feature nearly 80 golfers. Defending champion Ahmed Al Zayed is back in the fray, along with 2023 winner Khalifa Al Merisi and six-time champion Nasser Yaqoob Saleh, amongst other top participants.
In the ladies’ competition, last year’s champion Sarah Hobday will be aiming to repeat her success, but she will face a tough challenge from a field of nearly 20 competitors, including two young Bahraini talents in Habiba Maher and Fatima Albunni.
Following today’s action, tomorrow’s second and final round will commence from 6.30am, after which the prize-giving ceremony along with a raffle draw and closing celebration will be held at AGC.
Tournament organisers expressed their thanks and appreciation to the event’s sponsors, including Bapco Energies, InterContinental Bahrain for arranging lunch and dinner over the weekend, The Banz Group, Gulf Air for sponsoring a hole-in-one prize, Seef Dental, American Mission Hospital, BFC, Reza Hygiene, and Coca-Cola for supplying the beverages throughout the weekend.
Visitors are welcome to attend the tournament.
