TENNIS – Bahrain's youth tennis national team swept past their counterparts from Kyrgyzstan 3-0 yesterday in their second match-up of the Junior Davis Cup-Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Event, currently taking place in Kuching, Malaysia.
The Bahrainis are one of 22 squads taking part in the meeting. They are in Group D of the competition’s preliminary round.
Ahmed Alsayed gave the nationals a winning start yesterday after defeating Atai Aseinov 6-1, 6-1 in the first of two singles clashes. Redha Abdulnabi followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Ridvan Loianov in the other singles affair.
The pair then teamed up for their doubles match against Atai and Roman Kim, and the Bahraini tandem triumphed 6-3, 6-2 to complete their sweep.
The result helped Bahrain bounce back from a narrow 1-2 loss to Mongolia in their opening match-up.
The nationals now have a rest day today and will wait for the result of the match between Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan to learn of their placing in their pool.
Group A features Kuwait, Cambodia, and Indonesia; Group B includes Singapore, Macau, and Saudi Arabia; Group C is composed of Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Iraq; Group E features Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Bhutan; Group F includes Guam, Pacific Oceania, and Bangladesh; and Group G has four teams, namely the Philippines, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Laos.
The under-16 tournament is taking place under the International Tennis Federation and Asian Tennis Federation banners.
Matches will continue until Saturday later this week.
