HORSERACING – NATIONWIDE and Soldier’s Empire won the final two races of the 2024-25 Bahrain Turf Series late last night at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Nationwide lifted the Al Fateh Cup by Bapco Energies while Soldier’s Empire won The International Handicap.
Both events headlined the first of two nights in the His Majesty the King’s Cup Festival. Each high-profile event carried a total prize of $100,000.
The Al Fateh Cup by Bapco Energies was run over 1,200 metres. Nationwide took first place for owners Victorious Racing and trainer Fawzi Nass, with jockey Stephane Ladjadj in the saddle.
The seven-year-old gelding won with a gap of two lengths ahead of Desert Cop, competing for George Baker Racing Bahrain Syndicate, George Baker, and Callum Shepherd. Cover Point was third for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and Connor Beasley, while The Thin Blue Line finished fourth for Al Mohamediya Racing, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Hasan Al Saffar.
Meanwhile, The International Handicap covered a distance of 2,000m. Soldier’s Empire took the win for owners Mohamediya, trainer Marco Botti, and jockey Neil Callan.
The four-year-old gelding finished a length-and-a-quarter ahead of Mr Alan, who took second place for Amo Racing Limited, George Boughey, and Billy Loughnane. Killybegs Warrior was third for owners Baker, Fish, King, Tracey, trainer Baker, and jockey Patrick Cosgrave; while in fourth came Snellen, racing for Lindasy Laroche, Gavin Cromwell, and Gary Carroll.
In other races yesterday, Juantorena won the Coolmore Cup, carrying a $12,000 prize, for the Victorious-Nass-Ladjadj triumvirate; Raheel lifted The Mazad Sprint Cup ($8,000) for the Afoo-Ramadhan-Beasley connections; Son Of Zous took the Grand Seiko-Bahrain Jewellery Centre Cup ($8,000) for M and E Racing, AM Smith, and Marcialis Jaures; Silk Road won The Auction Cup by Mazad ($8,000) for Al Adiyat Racing, Smith, and Tom Marquand; and Baather won the Lexus Cup ($8,000) for Mohamediya, Osama Hashim, and Hasan Al Saffar.
