TENNIS – Bahrain's youth tennis national team narrowly lost to their counterparts from Mongolia 1-2 in their opening match-up of the Junior Davis Cup-Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Event.
The competition is being played in Kuching, Malaysia, with 22 countries taking part.
The Bahrainis got off to a strong start after Ahmed Alsayed won 7-6 (3), 6-2 against Zolbayar Ganbold in the first singles contest. But then Redha Abdulnabi suffered a 2-6, 0-6 loss to Zolbadar Urnukh in the next affair, setting up an exciting doubles clash to decide the overall match.
Ahmed and Abdulrahman Aldoseri then bowed to Zolbayar and Zolbadar 0-6, 1-6, sealing their defeat.
Bahrain will be looking to bounce back today when they take on Kyrgyzstan in their next match-up.
The three teams are in Group D for the competition’s preliminary round.
Group A features Kuwait, Cambodia, and Indonesia; Group B includes Singapore, Macau, and Saudi Arabia; Group C is composed of Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Iraq; Group E features Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Bhutan; Group F includes Guam, Pacific Oceania, and Bangladesh; and Group G has four teams, namely the Philippines, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Laos.
The under-16 tournament is taking place under the International Tennis Federation and Asian Tennis Federation banners. Matches will continue until Saturday later this week.
