CYCLING – Team Bahrain Victorious had a solid start yesterday in the 83rd Paris-Nice road race, being held in France.
Fred Wright was the squad’s best finisher in the 156.1-kilometre first of eight stages, taking 15th place overall.
He was part of the bunch sprint at the finish that was spearheaded by winner Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step. His finishing mark was three hours 32 minutes and three seconds.
Wright’s teammate Matevz Govekar took 21st place on the stage classification while Edoardo Zambanini came 37th. Jack Haig finished in 77th place and Santiago Buitrago was 83rd, while the Bahrain Victorious line-up was rounded out by Lenny Martinez in 125th and Kamil Gradek in 145th.
Following yesterday’s opening leg, Govekar was in the top 10 in the young riders’ classification for the white jersey. He placed eighth with a similar time of 3:32:01 as leader Magnus Sheffield of Ineos Grenadiers.
Bahrain Victorious were also third on the teams’ ranking, behind leaders XDS Astana Team and Team TotalEnergies.
The event continues today with stage two, covering 183.9km, starting and finishing in the communes of Montesson and Bellegarde, respectively.
