VOLLEYBALL – Qatar's Al Arabi and Oman’s Al Salam were both triumphant last night in the third West Asian Clubs Volleyball Championship for Men, currently being hosted by the kingdom.
Arabi defeated Al Qadsia of Kuwait 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-22) while Salam edged past Northern Refineries of Iraq 3-1 (29-27, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23).
Both matches were played at Isa bin Rashid Volleyball Arena at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
Arabi claimed their second win in as many matches with the result, while handing Qadsia a third successive defeat. Salam, meanwhile, won for the second time in three tries and handed Northern Refineries their second loss.
Today is a rest day and action is scheduled to resume tomorrow with two matches on schedule. At 4.30pm, Arabi go up against fellow-Qatari side Al Rayyan in a titanic clash between the tournament favourites, both of whom are undefeated. Then, at 7pm, Bahrain’s Al Ahli will go up against Salam as they resume their title bid following a bye yesterday.
The Bahrainis have so far won once, against the Iraqis, and lost the other, against Rayyan, in their opening two fixtures.
Following their clash tomorrow evening, they play Qadsia on Wednesday and then wrap up their tournament campaign against Arabi on Saturday.
The tournament is being played in league format and it is organised by the Bahrain Volleyball Association in cooperation with the West Asia Volleyball Association.
