WEIGHTLIFTING – Bahrain’s hopes of securing a medal on home soil in this year’s International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships 2024 rest on the broad shoulders of Paris Olympics bronze-medallist Gor Minasyan, who is in action today in the men’s over-109kg A group.
It will be the final competition of this year’s worlds, and it is scheduled for a 5.30pm start at the special venue set up across Bahrain National Theatre in Manama.
Minasyan is aiming to secure his first-ever world title. The 30-year-old gentle giant had won a silver and bronze for Bahrain in the previous two editions of the world championships. He took his runner-up finish in 2022 in Bogota, Colombia, and then won bronze last year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, both also in the men’s over-109kg category. His Paris Olympics bronze was in the over-102kg class.
Minasyan is set to face some stiff competition in his weight class’ A division. Others competing this evening are Paris Olympics silver-medallist Varazdat Lalayan of Armenia, Ali Davoudi and Alireza Yousefi of Iran, Bakari Turmanidze of Georgia, David Andrew Liti of New Zealand, Aaron Andrew Williams of the US, Ali Ammar Yusur Rubaiawi of Iraq, and Rafael De Jesus Cerro Castillo of Colombia.
