HORSERACING – Goemon lifted the HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup last night to headline an exciting eight-race card at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
The meeting was the second in as many days and it was held as part of the REHC National Day Horseracing Festival.
In attendance during yesterday’s events were Supreme Council for Youth and Sport (SCYS) first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa; Isa bin Salman Education Charitable Trust chairman, Labour Fund (Tamkeen) chairman, and REHC chairman Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa; and Supreme Council for Environment vice-president, REHC deputy chairman, and SCYS member Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid bin Isa Al Khalifa.
Goemon took the day’s feature event, which was the third race covering 1,600m with BD15,000 in prize money, for owner Mohammed Khalid Abdulrahim and trainer Haider Ebrahim. Jockey Alberto Sanna rode the five-year-old to first place in the Listed race.
Byline was the runner-up for Al Adiyat Racing, AM Smith, and Seamie Heffernan; while Ecosystem came third, also competing for Abdulrahim and Ebrahim, with Ebrahim Nader in the saddle. Royal Scimitar was fourth to take the final share of the purse for Al Mohamediya Racing, Fawzi Nass, and Andrew Breslin.
In yesterday’s other major race, Sovereign Spirit clinched the National Day Cup by Ministry of Information. Contested as the fourth race with a BD10,000 total prize, Sovereign Spirit triumphed for Al Afoo Racing, Jaber Ramadhan, and David Liska.
Zagato was second for Mohamediya, Nass, and PC McDonald; Panning for Gold third for Mohamediya, Nass, and Breslin; and Tartan Chief fourth racing for Mohamediya, Ali Abdulmajeed, and Hasan Al Saffar.
Two other HH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cups were up for the taking yesterday.
In the seventh and penultimate event, held over 1,200m with BD5,000 in prizes, London Look triumphed for Mkabees Racing, Ali Jan, and Anas Al Siyabi. Instinctive Move came second for Adiyat, Smith, and Heffernan; Ava Go Joe was third for AMS Racing, Jan, and Nader; and Buffer Zone fourth for Victorious, Nass, and Stephane Ladjadj.
Meanwhile, in race one, covering a 1,600m distance with BD3,000 in winnings, Kuheilan Al Adiyat 1894 was first for owners Victorious and trainer Yousif Taher, while ridden by Al Siyabi.
Second was Obeyan 1867 for Al Wasmiya, Abdulla Kuwaiti, and Nader; while Musannan 1811 finished third also for Wasmiya and Kuwaiti, with Adnan Jaffar in the saddle. Obeyan 1847 was fourth for Al Khaldiya, Nass, and Ladjadj.
Elsewhere on yesterday’s card, Sing In Craf won the HH Shaikh Faisal Bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in race six, held over 2,000m with a BD3,000 total prize, for owner Shaikh Isa bin Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, trainer Smith, and jockey Lee Newman.
Leo clinched first place in the HH Shaikh Nasser bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in the fifth race, covering 2,200m with BD2,000 in prizes, for Faisal Adel Abdulla, Adel Abdulla, and Al Saffar.
The Irishman triumphed in the HH Shaikh Abdulla Bin Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in race two, covering 1,600m with BD2,000 on offer, for L&L Racing, Smith, and Newman; and Alhadba took the win in the HH Shaikh Salman Bin Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in the eighth and final race, held across 1,200m with BD2,000 in winnings, for Mohamediya, Abbas Al Mawali, and Al Saffar.
