TENNIS – MASA Jankovic and Marat Salbiev lived up to their billings as top seeds by securing their respective singles titles yesterday in the Bahrain ITF Juniors Tournament 2024, which came to a close at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hardcourts in Isa Town.
The pair claimed their crowns in contrasting fashion.
Masa cruised to a convincing 6-3, 6-1 triumph over fourth seed Alisa Grinkevich to capture her champion’s trophy, while Marat needed to go the maximum to defeat Tunisian fourth seed Skander Nsairi 6-1, 6-7 (8), 6-3 for his title.
Following the two finals, BTF president Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa presented the winners and runners-up with their trophies and medals, in the presence of BTF general secretary Fuad Al Rowaie and other officials.
Masa and Marat joined the doubles pairings of Maria Ustic of Great Britain and Maria Andreou Portselan of Cyprus, and Emirhan Bulut and Yagiz Yildiz of Turkey, as champions in the tournament.
The Marias were winners of the girls’ doubles championship and Emirhan and Yagiz clinched the boys’ doubles triumph.
The tournament was part of the International Tennis Federation World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar. It was a J60 event – meaning that the singles winners took away 60 ranking points – and it was the third ITF competition to be held in the kingdom in the past two months. A pair of J30 championships also took place at the BTF in November.
