CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Matevz Govekar climbed three places to third in the young riders ranking yesterday following the second stage of the 46th Vuelta a Burgos in Spain.
The Slovenian narrowly missed out on a top 10 classification at the end of the 161-kilometre leg. He took 12th overall as Bahrain Victorious’ leading man, competing amongst the leaders in the finishing sprint.
In the process, Govekar improved on his standing amongst the race’s best youngsters in their battle for the white jersey. He remained 10 seconds behind leader Pavel Bittner of Team dsm-firmenich PostNL.
He also climbed six places to seventh on the race’s general classification. He is also 10 seconds behind current leader Caleb Ewan of Team Jayco AlUla.
Amongst his other Bahrain Victorious teammates in yesterday’s stage, Torstein Traen of Norway came 68th, Jasha Sutterlin of Germany was 83rd, Fran Miholjevic of Croatia was 106th, and Kamil Gradek of Poland was 116th.
The Vuelta a Burgos continues today with the third of five stages, set to cover 138km from Bodegas Nabal Gumiel de Izan to Lagunas de Neila.
