Prominent Saudi burger chain Hamburgini has filed for bankruptcy after a food poisoning outbreak ruined its reputation and eroded consumer trust.
Seventy people fell ill and one person died after eating at one particular Hamburgini branch in Riyadh. Investigations revealed that imported mayonnaise contained bacteria that caused botulism.
The incident quickly prompted regulators to shut down all 30 of Hamburgini's outlets in Riyadh and order the closure of the supplier's factory.
The closure caused severe financial damage to the chain, ultimately leading to its liquidation.
Founded in 2013, Hamburgini quickly rose to prominence and rapidly expanded across Saudi Arabia, with over 57 outlets around the kingdom, at one point boasting the title of the fastest-growing fast food chain in the country.
