CRICKET – NEPAL secured a nine-wicket win over Bahrain in their Group C match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier, currently taking place in Bangkok, Thailand.
Due to rain, the match was reduced to five overs per side. Batting first, Bahrain posted 41 runs for the loss of one wicket. Captain Deepika Rasangika scored 34 runs, including one six and six fours. Puja Mahato claimed the only wicket for Nepal.
Nepal chased down the target in 4.2 overs, losing only one wicket in the process. Kabita Kunwar, who was named the Player of the Match, top-scored with 18 runs, while Samjhana Khadka added 13 and Indu Barma contributed 7.
In a Group B match, UAE retired out all 10 batters at the score of 192 for 0 in 16 overs against Qatar. Esha Oza scored 113 runs while Theertha Satish contributed 74.
It was the first instance of a team retiring out more than two batters in a men’s or women’s international match.
UAE then went on to roll Qatar over for just 29 in an innings that featured seven ducks to seal a massive 163-run win in a match that lasted 27.1 overs. Since the UAE innings also had eight ducks, the game saw a record 15 ducks, easily the most in a women’s T20I.
Due to rain, Nepal’s opening match against Hong Kong was abandoned, with both teams sharing points. The victory over Bahrain puts the Himalayan nation back on track in their campaign for World Cup qualification.
